JO MORA’S CARTE OF LOS ANGELES: A TRAIL GUIDE

$18.95

Cartographer Jo Mora had tackled ten of his iconic poster-like “cartes” when he undertook the mapping of greater Los Angeles in 1942, literally 400 years after Juan Rodriguez Cabrilllo set foot on Catalina Island, claiming it for the Spanish Empire. With over 200 points of reference, Mora has much on that map to share with us in his special, uniquely humorous manner.

After completing meticulous research focused on the details depicted on Jo’s pictorial style map of Los Angeles, Nancy Grossman articulates in her text what Mora has presented in his visuals and captions. As she addresses every identifiable detail of this complex map, leaving none of the dozens of vignettes unexplained, her work will satiate the curiosity of the map’s viewers and enlighten readers as to the history of Los Angeles. It is as if the map on paper now has two sides – Jo’s image and Nancy’s related text.  – Peter Hiller, Jo Mora Trust Collection Curator
